As anticipation builds for Royal Windsor Horse Show, taking place from 15 – 18 May, British Show Jumping stars and Show Ambassadors Jack Whitaker and Joe Stockdale swapped their usual jumping horses for polo ponies to get a taste of the action-packed world of Arena Polo ahead of the return of the International Exhibition Polo Match on Saturday 17 May.
The duo participated in an exclusive Arena Polo session, experiencing first-hand the pace, precision, and teamwork that make the sport so electrifying. Guided by expert instructors, Ebe Sievwright and Jack Hine, from Guards Polo Club, Whitaker and Stockdale –alongside some of the country’s most popular influencers –took part in a competitive chukka, with Team Stockdale emerging victorious by three goals to one.
Following the success of its debut at Royal Windsor Horse Show in 2024, the International Exhibition Polo Match returns to the Castle Arena on the evening of Saturday 17th May and will once again see Guards Polo Club take-on Team Azerbaijan in what promises to be a thrilling contest for spectators. With the smaller dimensions of the arena format of Polo demanding fast play and sharp strategy, the match offers a spectacular showcase of the sport – set against the spectacular backdrop of Windsor Castle.
After their session in the saddle, the riders then visited Coworth Park, the Dorchester Collection’s Country House Hotel. Nestled in the countryside just outside Ascot, the luxury hotel blends refined comfort with equestrian heritage, making it the ideal backdrop for a relaxing afternoon. Over a spectacular lunch and a tour of the grounds, the duo reflected on their experience and the exciting lead-up to the Show.
Stockdale commented: “Arena Polo is so different to showjumping, but the speed and intensity of it is incredible – I did not expect to enjoy it this much!” Whitaker agreed: “It’s such a fast, technical sport, and once you get going, you really feel the adrenaline. We had a great time – it’s definitely something I’d love to try again.”
As Royal Windsor Horse Show draws near, the return of the International Exhibition Polo Match adds yet another highlight to the packed schedule – from world-class Show Jumping and Driving, to the Defender Shetland Pony Grand National, the Show continues to celebrate the best of equestrian world.
